Decorating: Autumn Decor in Coastal Colors

Our home has coastal colors throughout (blues, greens, whites, browns) which can make decorating for the fall a bit difficult.  Well, this year I decided to bite the bullet (or whatever the appropriate expression is) and use those colors in my holiday decor.  If you’re like me and have cooler colors and need inspiration for decorating this Thanksgiving, then hopefully the small things I have done will give you the courage to step out and use the colors you love, even in this season that tends to be on the more red/orange/richer side of the color spectrum.

First, we’ll start with the mantel decor.  It’s largely inspired by three of my favorite bloggers:  The Nester, Thrifty Decor Chick and Kimba at A Soft Place to Land.  I’ve already updated, as you can see the difference from the first picture (the current look) and this second picture (the previous look).  I love both of them, but B made this cute handprint artwork at Sunday School, and since the colors went with our decor I had to add it to my coastal colors fall collection.

I found this window (free decoration!!!) then draped left-over material from an earlier project over it to avoid the doomsday glare that mirrors, windows, what-not provide when placed on mantels (nobody wants to see a fan reflecting from the mantel, right TDC?).  Then I layered a silver (plastic I might add) platter, candle holder with an Oceans scented Pier1 candle, white pumpkin from The Dollar Tree, a 50 cent white pitcher I found at a garage sale and a childhood (scream “vintage”!!!!) book to finish the look.  Cheap cost.  Beautiful display, and all in the coastal color scheme that I love.

Layering…one of The Nester’s “31 Days to a Better Dressed Nest.”
I love vintage things, and this book of children’s rhymes and verses is from my own childhood…it makes me happy!

Now, let’s move it along to the entry.  I simply added a black wrought-iron cornecopia I bought about six years to the top of my great-grandmother’s french provential cabinet.  I filled the cornecopia with spanish moss then loosely wrapped elaborately decorated ribbon (blues, browns and silvers in the design) inside.  Finally, I added some small acorns and a couple of white pumpkins from The Dollar Tree.

I even made my very first wreath to go with our coastal color autumn theme…and the project only cost me about $10, as I already had a grapevine wreath on hand and many of the decorations were half-off at Hobby Lobby or from The Dollar Tree.  The wreath normally hangs on our front door, of course, but here it is in all it’s coastal-colored glory.

While decorating for the fall can be challenging when using cooler colors, I truly have enjoyed stretching myself and thinking a little bit outside of the box in celebrating this wonderful season.  Happy decorating and most of all, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
