A Dash of Rosemary, Vintage & Bright! (Christmas in the Diningroom)

Hey friend!  I hope your Friday is off to a good start.  We’ve been hunkering down in the casa for the last couple of days due to the icky weather and being a bit under the weather.  But don’t worry, I’m going to “garlic-up” and get rest, so I should be well on my way to feeling better soon!  In the meantime I wanted to share with you photos of our diningroom all dressed up for Christmas.  Even though we may be moving in the next three weeks, I wanted to decorate for this special time of the year.  When you have children there’s just no getting around it.  Plus, it’s rather cheery and bright, which makes my heart happy, too.  So, what you’ve all been waiting for…my diningroom!  I call it “A Dash of Rosemary, Vintage & Bright!”.  You’ll see why…

Isn’t that a fun diningroom?  And I had all the pieces on hand.  Below you’ll find a listing for the pieces.

Hutch Much? (before & after)

Remember last summer when I posed the question, “Would you paint this?”, referring to my heirloom hutch?

Hutch (before)

Well, not one to procrastinate (ha-ha-ha!) I’m here today to show you what I decided to do with it.  I wanted to brighten up the interior, while also maintaining the integrity of the piece since it is a family piece and in good condition.  My solution?

(after)

I found a pale blue roll of wrapping paper at Tuesday Morning’s for $2.99.  I then went about the complicated task of cutting the paper to size and adhering it to the back interior of the hutch with double-sided tape.  I really like the result and it can be removed easily, too, if ever needed!

The blue goes fabulously well with our paint color on the walls.  Seamless, I tell ya!  I filled the hutch with white doo-dads from around the house…it’s really quite lovely.  I just haven’t mastered the art of photographing the details in the light of our livingroom.  (I’m not moving that thing to get some pics…wayyy too heavy, folks).

While we’re looking at the hutch you may notice the painting at the top of it.  I found that at Goodwill a while back for like $1.00.  I just love finding art there.  It makes me happy to no end.  And so there you have it, four months later, an answer for the hutch.

Simply Autumn Tablescape

Last week when I posted about my autumn yarn wreath and fireplace mantel decor, The Nester shared some great tips for using what you have to create beauty around you this fall as well.  I love her philosophy on decor because it’s so true that you do not have to buy, buy, buy to have a lovely home.  Our home is a testament to that fact.

So, here’s my Simply Autumn Tablescape.  The “table runner” is really a 1/3 of a sheet I bought years ago at Goodwill for $3.99.  The other two pieces to this sheet can be found hanging as curtains in our “cottage.”  I did no hemming (or hawing) to this piece, so I thought the messy, flowy look would work great and hide any raw edges.

For the stylish “stick” centerpiece I just used a large Ball jar, filled it with dried beans that we will never eat and plopped some large sticks from the front yard into it.  Easy!  Then the last piece to this tablescape is the little silver tray.  I filled it with coffee beans we had on hand and three tea lights.  That’s it!

If you were around here when I painted our dining room table and chairs you may find those shelves on the back wall to be a new addition.  Yep, I found those on the side of the road.  They’re a bit chipped, but I just call that character.  I really like their placement above the buffet, giving it more depth.

How do you like to decorate your dining table for Autumn or Thanksgiving?  I think Edie did a beautiful job at Life in Grace…don’t you?

And just for fun let’s look at a before and after shot of our dining room…

If I were a basket case…

If I were a basketcase I would want to be like this one:

I found it this past weekend while thrifting on the 1st annual National I Love Thrifting Day.  I’ve kind of got a thing for baskets, but withhold the urge to buy them, usually.  But this one…this one was too cool to pass up, especially at $3.99!  When I first saw it, it reminded me of these things (a dough bowl, is the correct term, I believe):

via

Do you see it or is it just me?  Okay, it may just be me, but the size & the shape of it are totally similar…

I may paint the outside of it or whitewash it, although the natural wood is pretty, too.  I’m thinking it would make a great fresh produce basket…I could take it the farmer’s market (or grocery store, whichever comes first).  Or it could hold a floral arrangement or candlescape (although I’m quite anal rententive when it comes to candle use & safety, so I’d have to be extra careful about it).  What would you do with a large basket like this?

The other cool thing I found while thrifting was a large finial.  I didn’t know how to spell finial before this weekend, but I have been eyeing them for a while.  This one was only $4.99…yay!!!

I really like it’s natural state of dark brown, but have considered spray painting it white or turquoise or some other fun color…Here are some pics for inspiration:

So would you leave the finial dark brown or would you spray paint it if you had a choice?  (And there’s always room for a spray paint choice, right?)

Many, many fun people went thrifting this weekend, so I’ve linked up my finds to  Southern Hospitality .  Did you find anything thrifting this weekend?

Happy Thrifting!

I Love Thrifting…Do You???

In case you haven’t heard today is the new National “I Love Thrifting” Day.  So exciting!  Last weekend we had the Fourth of July and this weekend we have something to celebrate thrifty shopping.  We live in such an awesome country, don’t we?  And for the international bella friends, I’m sure next year we can make this into International I Love Thrifting Day…why not?  Right?

Anywho, the hubby and I are going to do a first today…that’s right:  We are going garage saling together!!!  Yay!!!!!!  This could be the start of something beautiful.  (It’s at least going to be the start of me not getting lost because of my uber-terrible sense of direction).  Greg is the bomb-diggity (is that expression still used???) at locating places, which means we will save time & actually end up at alot of the garage sales we’ve tracked down through craigslist.  I’m.So.Excited.  Can you tell?

I have a list of things we’re looking for…I hope we end up with some of them!  Are you thrifting this weekend, too?

Happy Weekend,
Jen

Another Way to Use Your Shower Curtain

Each time I stop by our local thrift store I check the linens department.  I’m usually hunting for more white sheets (which can be used as curtains, slipcovers and a myriad of other things).  Sometimes I’ll pick up other linens that just “speak” to me, like this yellow afghan did back in the dreary days of winter.  But on this trip I found something else that appealed to me:  a shower curtain.

The design fit perfectly with our home and at the time I thought I might use it as a tablecloth.

But with our recent livingroom restyle this shower curtain became a lovely slipcover for our bench.

For $3.00 that’s not such a bad deal.  Who knew that a shower curtain could be used in so many different ways?  And the moral of this story?  Well, the next time you’re thrifting take a peak at the linens and see if there’s anything that might fit with your home’s look.  You just may surprise yourself.

Jen

Oh and by the way, always wash your linens in HOT water after purchasing from a second-hand shop.  Letting them lay out in the sunshine is another great way to rid them of any icky things.

A Rockin’ Restyle (No Paintbrush & No Sewing Required!)

If you don’t already have a rocking chair like the one pictured on the left in the above picture then I’m 99% sure you could find one on Craigslist today.  These chairs come a dime a dozen and ours was a hand-me-down waiting for some love, hiding out in the garage.

I pulled it out of the garage last weekend and brought it to the front porch.  It wasn’t quite the look I was going for to welcome guests, so then I pulled out the spraypaint primer and got to spraying.

It took the entire can…but was totally worth it.  I let the paint dry (and in the meantime I worked on the garden…yippee!!!  Pics to come next week on my flower babies).

After the primer dried it was time to spraypaint it Valspar’s Glossy White (then I let it dry).

Now onto the cushion cover.  I took a ruffled bedskirt that I found at Goodwill a couple of years ago ($3-4) and simply wrapped it around the existing cushions.  I tucked in all the edges and it draped nicely over the chair.

For the pillow I used a bedsheet that I had cut into thirds.  This was another Goodwill find from a couple of years ago ($3-4).  I wrapped the sheet around the pillow, tied a knot in the back and tucked in any loose ends.  Ta-da!  A no sew-recover.

It’s been about a week since the restyle and everything is holding up beautifully.

Is there a chair you can restyle (no paintbrush or sewing required)?  You will be in love with the results, I’m sure.

Add Character to Your Coffee Table (no paint required)

Today I will share with you tips on using what you already have to add character and beauty to your coffee table.  You can use these tips to fit whatever home style you prefer, but the look that my home embodies is a cross between Funky Junk Interiors and Miss Mustard Seed, I call it “Vintage Eclectic” as you will see for yourself in a moment.

When I rearranged the livingroom last week we were in need of a coffee table to complete the look.  We had been coffee table-free for a couple of years (since our youngest son was born) for safety reasons, as they prove hazardous for those in the early walking phase of life.  Plus the coffee table had seen better days, as it used to have a decoupaged design on top, which our oldest managed to pull off when he was 4 years old, despite the enormous amount of Mod Podge I used to adhere it.  But that’s another story for another day.  The bottomline is that this table was kinda ugly but we needed to use it to balance the room (and have a spot to put our coffee cups down).

So if you’re like us with a coffee table that has seen better days or perhaps you just want to give your table that’s in decent condition a new look without going through the process of painting it, then these tips will guide you through the process and hopefully in the end you’ll love your coffee table once again.

First you’ll need a coffee table…

Then you need to place it in the right location in your room.

Now it’s time to get to work (or play, if you’re like me)!

TIP #1  Add a layer of texture to the top of the coffee table.

This wood piece that I layed on top of the coffee table adds depth and character to it.  I found this piece at Tuesday Morning in the Clearance section a few years ago for $1!!!  It’s part of a broken chair.

You can achieve a similar look by using a leftover wood piece, a large decorative piece or even a table runner will do the trick of adding texture (perhaps burlap?).  Shop the house, garage, other people’s trash piles and you may find just the right piece for this first layer of texture.

TIP #2  Add an interesting book (or several books).

This “Atlas of the World” by National Geographic has a bold color that flows with our home’s colors and it’s large size and cover’s design adds a lovely “worldly” theme to the table.

Is there a book you love with a cover that speaks to you or complements your home decor?  Perhaps you can shop a thrift store for a large book that can be recovered with cloth or decorative paper.  My husband found this book at his library’s book sale for $1.50.  When libraries have a book sale it’s a great place to find hidden treasures!

TIP #3  Use an interesting container to hold odds and ends.

This wood piece was a garage sale find for 25 cents.  It is perfect for layering and the rough wood gives it a subtle beachy-rustic feel.  I love how the “cubbies” provide perfect storage for our remote controls, a decorative apple and a small “vase” of flowers.

You could achieve this look by using a picture frame with the glass removed or create another unique way to store your odds and ends, like a white pitcher, an interesting decorative plate…the possibilities are endless.

TIP #4  Add flowers or a plant for a touch of nature and beauty.

Plants bring life into the home (and they breathe life into the home, too).  These flowers make me smile everytime I see them.  I simply placed a vintage cup in the holder for my vase.  I found 5 of these cups at Goodwill for 85 cents each.  The flowers bring a softness to complement the wood pieces on the coffee table.

You’ll also want to have coasters handy for you and your guests.  I’m using my great-grandmothers vintage glass coasters.  These are also great to use as candleholders.

I hope these tips have helped you see the many ways you can add character and beauty to your coffee table without the use of paint.  Have you ever changed the look of your coffee table by simply using various layers and textures?  How do you like to “style” your table?

Risky Business: A Wall Collage

The Nester is hosting Take a Risk Day this Tuesday so I thought I would join in on the fun, being the adventuresome gal that I am.  Now I’m not talking about climbing mountains, white water rafting or jumping cliffs, at least not physically…metaphorically, yes, I will be climbing a mountain in my own home.  And no, I’m not talking about Mount de Poppy, as it is laid to rest thanks to my helpful hubby and new system for laundry.  I’m talking about accomplishing a home task that I’ve been afraid to do.

My risk…creating a collage of photos and gasp, ordering large prints of family photos.  Yes, I have been scared to order family photos.  Ridiculous, I know, but seeing as I have a repulsion for clutter the fear of ordering the “wrong” photos, the “wrong” size or not knowing where to place my printed photos has kept me from doing so for the last eight years.  Eight years, people.  Now I will order the 4×6 version occasionally, but the last thing I wanted to happen was to have boxes and boxes of un-scrapbooked (is that a word?) photos waiting for me piled in the corner of the garage.  And so my photos remained digital only, that is until I finally took that risk last week and ordered some large prints of family photos.

It was scary.

Real scary…

You think I’m joking?

Well, I’m not…and taking this risk has brought me so much JOY because now when I look at that big wall in the livingroom I see our family on many adventures…hiking in Colorado, sight-seeing in Tennesse, soaking up the sun in South Padre, exploring a mission in San Antonio and just being a family.

The mirrors that frame out the photo collage were a steal of a deal that I found at Goodwill a couple of years ago.

I also snagged all of the frames for cheap, cheap, cheap at the Goodwill of the Goodwill, aka “the bargain barn.”  They seriously cost me between .50 – $1.25 each.  To give the mirrors and the frames a cohesive look I simply spray painted the frames white.

To create the “mattes” for the large frames I purchased four poster boards and cut them down to size.  They cost 38 cents each and give the wall collage that “gallery” feel.

Is there a project you’ve been stalling on due to fear?  What would it take for you to conquer that fear and make your home the place you desire it to be for you and/or your family?

Happy Creating,
Jen

Psst…if you haven’t checked out Sherry & John’s Wall Gallery at Young House Love, then go there now.  They used the same method that I did for the frame placement/hanging.  Enjoy:)

Tutorial: How to Turn a Coffee Table into a Bench

Remember last week when I shared the metamorphosis of our master bedroom?  Well, I promised to show you how I made this bench, too.  Somehow between episodes of Curious George & Thomas the Train, taking care of a sick kiddo (and getting cabin fever while I was at it!) then nearly pulling down my pants in Zumba while trying to adjust my shirt (it’s complicated), I forgot to post about it until this evening.  So if you’ve just been waiting all week on pins and needles for this tutorial I sincerely apologize.

TUTORIAL:

Step 1:  Get old, icky coffee table out of the garage.  Possibly wipe it down.

Step 2.  Place your son’s crib mattress on top of it, since he’s now in a big boy bed.  Sniffle, sniffle (not really, he LOVES his big boy bed & I just love it when he actually sleeps, so it’s definitely a win-win situation).

Step 3.  Place a lovely bedskirt on top of it.  (I found this at Goodwill last year for like $4 – score!)

1950s Doily-inspired Afghan Throw

Step 4.  Top it all off with a special throw, like this doily-inspired afghan my husband’s aunt made for me last year.

And there you have it – a coffee table turned into a bench.  Is there anything in your garage or another room in your house that you can turn into a bench?  I’d love to see it if you’ve done something like that.

Happy Creating!
